Imran khan- Bewafa (Analysis)
In the opening scenes of Bewafa the name of the lead artist fades from the first shot to the second. You can clearly see the name by the end of the second shot. This was purposely included as it immediately informs the audience the name of the artist behind the song. This is effective as people who watch the music video on tv channels will not have to search endlessly looking for the name of the artist but rather it saves them time by directly telling them. From the opening scenes the audience can tell that it is a narrative based music video as the use of costume,props and setting connotates that it is a narrative based music video. The prop of a photo framed tells us this photo is of great significance as framing a photo suggests that they were willing to pay money to frame it which means it is of great significance to the owner. By looking at the photo we can see two people in a relationship which means that the theme around the music video will be about love. The costume worn by the artist suggests that it is a narrative based music video as he is wearing clothes that are considered everyday clothes. This would be different from a perfomance based music video as they will wear clothes associated with dancing or partying.
Often in narrative based music video themed around love there is a shot that shows the couple together. As seen in the photo the couple are cuddling together with the female sleeping on the males shoulder. This immediately informs the audience that the two characters are in a relationship as this is a stereotype associated with relationships due to females often being portrayed in media texts sleeping on their partners shoulder. This is an indicator of the males masculinity and power and shows him as being strong. This shot informs the audience in who the artist is referring to when he is singing about betrayal.
The mise en scene in this scene is an example of how many R&B/Hindi music videos use settings and props to build up the artists image of being wealthy. The background behind Imran Khan suggest that he is wealthy as he has vases which are often shown in media texts as being a signifier of wealth. The designs on his pillow also suggest that he is wealthy as it has intricate beautiful designs on the pillow which suggest wealth. The house looks relatively spacious which again suggest that he is not poor but it well off. The snake is a signifier of power and also represents the theme of betrayal. Snakes are creatures associated with fear and many people fear snakes. By putting a living snake on Imran Khan's shoulder it suggests that he does not fear the snakes. This suggests to the audience that he is powerful as he has no fear. Also the snake signifies betrayal as snakes are often associated with the characteristics of being sneaky and attacking its prey while its not looking at the snake. This suggests a snake will hurt you while your not looking. This can be associated with the female character as she is hurting the lead artist without him being aware of it.
