Conventions of an R&B music video
In this screenshot it shows that the male R&B star ;which is Trey Songz, is topless. This is often the case with all male R&B music videos as the target audience for male R&B stars are often young teenage girls so they make the male star topless in order to cater the target audiences desires. As often in R&B music videos the characters often wear jewellery. This screenshot shows this as the male star is wearing a gold chain along with the female character even though their is minimal clothing between them. In R&B music videos men are not alone in wearing minimal clothing as women are also presented with little or no clothing in order to present themselves to the male viewers as being an object of desire. R&B presents women as being soft goddess type .
This is evident in this screenshot as the way the camera is placed it shows the male as being gentle and intimate with the female which represents her as being soft due to the way they are touching.
Some music videos this convention is challenged. An example of this is CIara-Like a boy. In this music video Ciara presents herself as a boy and challenges the typical female clothing expected in a music video as she wears boyish clothes and is not presented with minimal clothing. dly breaking his heart and
Conventions of a Pop music video
The clothing in pop videos is usually always very bright and upbeat. But some artists decide to use original ,strange clothing. This is really to try to create a brand image so when you think of an artist you think of their strange clothing. An example of this is Lady Gaga as she wears a different set of clothing to someone more traditional like katy perry who uses a very bright and upbeat clothing whereas lady gaga uses more gothic themed attire which can be argued is her unique selling point .
Another convention of a pop music video is that the artist is always the main focus throughout the music video. No matter what shot they appear in they will always be the main focus when in shot.
The lighting in pop videos is usually bright with white backgrounds or a background that will contrast with them making them easily visible .This links with the convention of the artist being the main focus throughout the music video as if they are easily visible then the audience will always see them thus making sure that they are present throughout the whole music video. Although sometimes it will be dim with a spotlight this is usually depending on what the lyrics are like. The screenshot shows this as the background is bright and contrasts with the main pop artist. This is so that they are easily visible and makes sure that she is the main focus throughout the music video.
Unlike R&B pop rarely sexualises women and creates a representation that these lead female artists are to be idolised and should be considered a role model instead of being solely objects of desire and sexual objects. The difference may be caused by the difference in target audience. Pop's general audience is young teen aged girls whereas R&B is more teen aged boys so have to cater each audience.
